Why hello there!

Growing up I was left to my own devices, so I spent most of my time coloring and drawing random doodles. Having spent so much time alone, I was more aware of my surroundings such as what people were wearing, their habits, and their reactions.  When I’m not drawing, I would watch supernatural action-adventure Japanese animations, which heavily influenced my art style and that led to a love of illustration as I feel it can say more for me than the words I write.

Having a strict parent that discouraged me from pursuing a career as an artist limited my access to high-quality art supplies. I remember I always wanted drawing paper with nice pens and markers, but I was stuck with notebook paper, crayons, and ballpoint pens. When I finally got a micron pen, it was difficult to start using it. It has a fine needle point tip with pigmented ink that helped me create intricate designs that were high quality. After using cheap art tools for years, I didn’t think my art was good enough for high-quality art supplies until I found my aesthetic style with micron pens. Growing up, I have always been interested in “spooky” subjects and folklore, which heavily influenced the work I have created today.

Being a graphic designer and illustrator, I feel like I live in two different worlds. On one side, I have a professional minimalist design with balanced compositions and typography. On the other side, I have created intricate illustrations that are entrenched with metaphors and symbolism. Many of my illustrations have a Kimo-kawaii style which highlights innocent, childlike simplicity but is infused with creepy elements. One of these projects is titled Into the Unknown, which is a fictional merchandise company that sells products of cryptids. Using the Kimo-kawaii style, I illustrated ten cryptids that had a cutesy but spooky style and implemented them into posters, plushies, and stickers. I became interested in cryptids due to their ability to bring together differing groups of people.

I had an amazing opportunity to be in Indiana State University’s Summer Term Art Research Scholarship (STARS) to complete Entanglement, a series of seven large-scale illustrations. Recently I had this professional development opportunity to be in a graphic design contest at University of Southern Indiana (USI) Design It Forward Kentucky in Evansville, IN to create solutions under pressure with two other designers. I have been exploring different art mediums such as acrylic paint and linoleum carving and thought about incorporating these elements with my graphic design work in the future.

Illustrations

I use micron pens and ink. I like to work in black and white colors but sometimes I use color to highlight certain pieces.

All of us have lost someone or something and may have trouble moving on. Sometimes it feels like we are being consumed by everything around us. This work depicts a journey of two beings going through different points in their lives. The lines represent the dense mass we all must swim through. If you have one special person in your life, or a companion that keeps you going, you feel like you can go anywhere with them. You both traverse the different experiences of life and unexpectedly one may get too consumed with thoughts of work, family, friends, and personal things we all are going through. You can feel they are slipping away from you, and you cannot do anything about it. If there is no one or nothing to keep us going, we might lose ourselves and feel like we are all alone. We end up becoming part of the concoction that is entangling us slowly.

Whirlpools

There is a time when a person can feel all their emotions at once. Memories from different periods of their life, smells from the past, and everything mixing into each other creating whirlpools. It is an indescribable feeling when you feel like you are living in the past when you are in the present. And yet, the present will be the past. Everything is overlapping each other in the best and worst ways therefore we often find ourselves intertwining with the past, present, and future.

There is a painful lump in your throat when you are overcome by emotion. Bottling up tears and frustration can cause intense pressure that builds up and forms a barrier. We all have tried swallowing the lump, but it can't be swallowed,

Temporary

Nothing lasts forever but it is never gone. Even if something is there for the moment, it lives on in a memory or somewhere else. In life we often take things for granted, such as the meal we last ate, the oxygen that keeps us alive, and the shoes we wear everyday. Everything is fleeting even emotionally, such as feelings, memories, and dreams. We are all temporarily here so why not make the most of it?

Spooky Season

Seasonal acrylic on canvas painting during October! I incorporated my organic intertwining lines with acrylic paint marker.
